Al Iaquinta, a former runner-up on The Ultimate Fighter, has decided to remove himself from April’s UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen card, just a day after Joe Proctor pulled out of their planned fight with an injury.
“I have been training through an injury to my leg the past six weeks, re-injuring it again a little more seriously last Saturday,” said Iaquinta, in an interview with FightLine Thursday. “I was going to push through it and fight anyway. When I heard Joe pulled out, I decided not to fight at UFC 159 and rehab my injury back to 100-percent before taking another fight.”
The two were teammates on TUF last year, with Iaquinta making it to the finals. The 25-year-old is 5-2-1 in his MMA career.
Bobby Green and Conor McGregor both made themselves available as replacements for Proctor via Twitter since news broke concerning his exit.
Following his loss to Michael Chiesa in 2012, Iaquinta underwent surgery to fix his knee. That is his lone professional fight since late in 2011 after spending the early parts of last year inside the TUF house.
