Interim UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao won the title last year, defeating Urijah Faber. Now, he is set to make his second defense of the belt when he battles Eddie Wineland in June.
The two were on hand Wednesday for a kickoff press conference for UFC 161: Barao vs. Wineland. The question of a future possible title-unification fight with Dominick Cruz came up quickly during the session.
“I am looking at this fight first and foremost,” Barao said. “After that, yeah, definitely to Dominick. But, not only that, other fights (as well). But, for now, my focus is the next fight.”
Barao (30-1) scored his fifth UFC victory this past February, submitting Michael McDonald in England. He has not lost since his MMA debut back in 2005, recording just one no-contest during the run.
“I am very happy to be in Canada,” Barao said. “I am training very hard and want to make a very good show for everybody. I am preparing 100-percent, working my boxing and jiu-jitsu.”
