Pat Curran said someone would need to kill him to take his Bellator featherweight championship. At last night’s Bellator 95, Russia’s Shahbulat Shamhalaev was unable to do that and Curran took a round one submission to retain the title.
The champion now has two tournament winners he must defeat. Frodo Knihasbulaev won last night’s Season 8 tournament. Daniel Straus still has a title shot after he won Season 6. He was slated to fight Curran at Bellator 95, but broke his hand a few weeks ago and was then arrested on several drug charges.
As for when Curran returns, that will be up to Bellator officials.
“As long as I’m healthy and have no injuries, I want to get right back at it,” said Curran at the post-fight conference. “But that’s up to Bjorn [Rebney] and the guys at Bellator and my coaches. We’ll come up with a game plan on when to get back in there next.”
Curran was open to returning for the Summer Series, which begins in a few months.
