Charles Oliveira was caught off guard when the UFC offered him Frankie Edgar. Without hesitation, the featherweight accepted the bout against the former champion.
“I was caught by surprise with this fight,” said Oliveira to TATAME. “Edgar is the second best and it’s an honor to be scaled to meet. This bout will be the biggest challenge of my life and I am very happy with it. There are many people saying that I will lose, but I will prove to the contrary.”
Since becoming a featherweight a year ago, Oliveira is 2-1 with a pair of submission wins. His defeat came to the highly ranked Cub Swanson at September’s UFC 152.
Edgar enters off three straight losses. After dropping his lightweight title and rematch that followed, he made the cut to featherweight. He debuted opposite champion Jose Aldo in a decision defeat.
Oliveira vs. Edgar is July 6 at UFC 162. It comes from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV.
