Alexander Gustafsson didn’t want to disappoint his Swedish fan base or the UFC, but “The Mauler” was not cleared to fight this weekend after suffering a cut in training last week.
Gustafsson was scheduled to face Gegard Mousasi, but after receiving stitches, he was told by the Swedish MMA Federation that he was not cleared to compete.
“I am extremely sorry for this, and I feel for Gegard Mousasi,” Gustafsson posted on his personal website. “The next step is that I sit down with my team and start planning the future.”
It was reported on UFC Tonight Tuesday that Gustafsson suffered the injury after slipping during a wrestling drill. He hit his head on the cage, causing the cut.
Mousasi will now meet Ilir Latifi, a teammate of Gustafsson’s. A picture of the cut can be found below:
