One name UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez won’t have to worry about is Daniel Cormier. After the former Strikeforce star takes on Frank Mir in April, he’s officially dropping to light heavyweight.
Velasquez has Cormier as the one who will stop Jon Jones and capture the light heavyweight championship in the process.
“[Cormier] said after this one fight with Frank he’s going down in weight to fight Jon Jones,” said Velasquez to Orange County Register. “I definitely have all the faith in him in that fight, for sure.”
The fight with Mir was originally set for November under the Strikeforce name. It was scratched with the entire card as Mir was injured. They now are the co-main event of UFC on FOX 7 on April 20. That’s out of the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA.
Cormier enters undefeated with 11 wins. Mir lost a UFC championship shot in May.
Before Cormier gets at Jones, Chael Sonnen is first in line. He challenges for the belt at UFC 159 out of the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. That will be April 27.
