Demetrious Johnson is still gunning for a return at UFC on FOX 8 in July. The flyweight champion had shoulder surgery earlier in the month after suffering three labrum tears, causing him to pullout as the headliner of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 17 Finale.
“As long as my shoulder doesn’t hurt, [my trainer] Matt [Hume] will make the decision and let the UFC know we want on that card,” said Johnson to MMA Junkie. “The UFC already knows we do, but we want to see how rehab goes first.”
Johnson goes to rehab twice a week and exercises twice a day at home. The final decision if Johnson will be ready for a late July return should be known in six weeks.
The champion doesn’t mind where he lands on the card, as he just wants to fight. He looks to defend his title against John Moraga, who was his original opponent for TUF 17 Finale.
UFC on FOX 8 comes from the KeyArena in Seattle, WA on July 27.
