Saad Awad wasn’t even originally in the Season 8 lightweight tournament for Bellator. Right before the tournament opened, former winner Patricio “Pitbull” Freire went down with an injury and Awad was named as the replacement.
He’s since made quick work of that golden opportunity, knocking out Guillaume DeLorenzi in 31 seconds and Will Brooks in 43 seconds. With such quick work, a healthy Awad wishes at least one of those fights went longer.
“I did want to put that fear into the other fighters to look out for me,” said Awad to MMA Junkie. “But now people just think I landed some lucky punches. So I kind of wish that I went out there and fought for a few rounds before the finish, because then I could show people that I’m not coming in here to get bullied, and I didn’t just land a lucky punch.”
He takes on David Rickels in the finals at tomorrow’s Bellator 94. Rickels took two decisions to land in the finals.
Bellator 94 is March 28 from the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, FL with the main card airing on Spike TV at 10 p.m. ET. FightLine will be there be the play-by-play.
