Emanuel Newton made an impact in Bellator’s Season 8 light heavyweight tournament after knocking out favorite Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal in the semifinals with a spinning backfist.
Arnold Chon, of Wild Card MMA, is responsible for the change in Newton after training under him following his opening round win. Less than three weeks into working with Chon and Newton was able to defeat the former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion.
“I was only with [Chon] for two and a half weeks before the ‘King Mo’ fight, and my hands look like night and day,” said Newton to MMA Junkie Radio. “I’ve had another month with the man, so I think I’m twice the fighter as when I fought ‘Mo.'”
The finalists in the tournament both ended their two previous fights. Mikhail Zayats has not let an opponent escape the first round.
They meet on the main card of tomorrow’s Bellator 94 on March 28. It comes from the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, FL. The preliminary card streams on Spike.com and the main card airs on Spike TV at 10 p.m. ET.
