With a roster that has too many fighters, the UFC has plenty of wrestlers. Who is the most valuable in that department could be debated. Jake Ellenberger has selected former champion Frankie Edgar.
“My top five wrestlers in MMA right now, besides myself, have Frankie Edgar at number one,” said Ellenberger on the Rick J Lee channel. “He’s a fantastic wrestler and had a lot of success as lightweight. He was a world champion.”
Edgar won the lightweight title in 2010. He defended it successfully twice and once to a draw. Last February, he dropped the belt and rematch to follow against Benson Henderson.
With some encouragement, he cut to featherweight and lost his debut against titleholder Jose Aldo. He’s expressed interest in a return opposite Cub Swanson, but nothing has been confirmed.
Ellenberger just took a first round knockout over former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nate Marquardt at UFC 158.
