Johny Hendricks earned the slot as the No. 1 contender in the UFC’s welterweight division, but what he’s accomplished to land there isn’t enough, according to Chael Sonnnen.
“Hendricks has been on fire, but he has not done the work that Ellenberger has done and he has not beat the guys that Ellenberger’s beat,” said Sonnen to Yahoo! Sports. “I will not take a thing away from Johny Hendricks, but to overlook ‘The Juggernaut,’ who’s been in there against top contenders is inappropriate.”
Ellenberger is 8-2 for the UFC with losses coming to the highly ranked Martin Kampmann and former interim champion Carlos Condit. He recently defeated former Strikeforce champion Nate Marquardt in round one at UFC 158 to take Knockout of the Night.
On that same card, Hendricks secured the next title shot against Georges St-Pierre when he defeated Condit in the co-main event via decision.
Hendricks wants his championship shot in August, but St-Pierre is reportedly down with an Achilles injury that may keep him away from the Octagon for around six months.
Sonnen faces another champion in Jon Jones at UFC 159 on April 29. That comes from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.
