Chris Weidman can shock the world later this year when he faces UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in the main event of UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman.
For now, he will have to settle for earning another honor, as Weidman was placed on Forbes Magazine’s list of 20 Sports Names You Need To Know in 2013.
Weidman will face Silva on July 6, finally earning himself a shot at “The Spider” and the 185-pound title. The magazine had this to say about “The All-American.”
Weidman has only fought nine times in his MMA career, but he won all nine bouts, six of which by either knockout or submission. That success and a bit of self promotion have earned him a title shot against Anderson Silva, UFC’s Middleweight Champion, at this summer’s UFC 162. Weidman, a former D1 All-American wrestler at Hofstra, is the superior grappler and has a real chance at stealing the strap and becoming a major name. Even if Weidman fails to take down the champ, he’s a dangerous fighter who promises to be in the mix for years to come.
