Bellator will return with their third installment of the Summer Series in a few months. Featured tournaments will be the bantamweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions according to Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney.
“I would love to do heavyweight over the summer, so that’s where I’ve been focused with the team at talent development,” said Rebney to MMA Junkie.
Alexander Volkov recently won the vacant heavyweight championship after defeating Richard Hale at Bellator 84. The division currently doesn’t have a No. 1 contender. The previous titleholder Cole Konrad retired in September with the belt.
Light heavyweight champion Atilla Veighjust won the title from Christian M’Pumbu at Bellator 91 and still must face the winner of the Season 8 tournament. The winner of the Season 8 tournament will get the shot first.
Eduardo Dantas defended his bantamweight title for the first time at Bellator 89, which was last month.
“The cornerstone of everything that we’ve got going on with Spike now is I can get so many tournaments into these different packages,” said Rebney.
The promotion plans to have four or five tournaments when they return in the fall as a way to keep their champions busy.
