Josh Burkman Wants WSOF Title Shot With Win On Saturday

Josh Burkman was at a crossroads. He had been released by the UFC and was looking to return after taking in several wins. UFC matchmaker Joe Silva informed Burkman that it was possible, but warned that a large amount of releases were coming since Strikeforce would be folding.

In the end, Burkman decided to sign a multi-fight contract with the upstart World Series of Fighting (WSOF). If he beats Aaron Simpson on the upcoming show, he thinks a title shot could be headed his way.

“I think the winner of this fight deserves a title shot,” said Burkman on Sherdog Radio.

With the addition of highly ranked welterweight Jon Fitch to the roster it could change everything, Burkman thought. He does believe that Fitch shouldn’t be handed a title shot in his debut for the promotion.

“I think that Jon Fitch is in line there too, but I don’t think anybody should get cut from an organization and come off a loss and fight for a title,” said Burkman. “I think that they need to give Jon Fitch a fight and I think that the winner of that fight needs to fight the winner of this fight for the World Series of Fighting title.”

WSOF hasn’t introduced any belts or made formal announcements for when that will take place.

Burkman vs. Simpson are set for the WSOF 2 this Saturday, March 23. It comes from Revel Casino in Atlantic City, NJ and can be seen on the NBC Sports Network.
