In his fist fight as a welterweight, Patrick Cote felt the pressure coming from Bobby Voelker as the later rounds kicked in. While Cote began tiring out and Voelker connected with some big shots, the thought of stopping the fight never crossed his mind.
“I will never in my life tap on strikes,” said Cote to MMA Fighting. “I’ve got submitted in the past, but I can take punishment. Everybody was worried about my chin, but they saw it was good today.”
Cote gave himself the first and third round as he took the decision win with all three judges scoring it 29-28.
Voelker had three wins out of Strikeforce before joining the UFC in January with a list of other fighters. Cote is now 2-1 since he returned to the promotion last year. That defeat came from Cung Le.
The two were the main event of the preliminary card at yesterday’s UFC 158.
