UFC 158: Georges St-Pierre Vs. Nick Diaz

We’ve arrived at the main event, as UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (23-2) will face former Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz (26-8). As GSP said after the weigh-ins, the time for talk is over. Yves Lavigne serves as the referee in charge of the action. As soon as GSP entered the Octagon, Diaz started to talk trash to him and was pushed back by Lavigne.

Round 1: GSP throws a kick and Diaz throws his hands in the air. Takedown for St-Pierre and Diaz pulls guard, looking for a possible armbar or triangle. Big elbow gets through and lands from the top by GSP. Diaz flips out and GSP winds up on his back. Diaz keeps trying to roll out into a possible submission, but GSP isn’t allowing it and is landing with several big lefts and rights. Into side control but unable to remain there. Two elbows get through from GSP to the face of Diaz. Appears to be swelling on the face of Diaz. St-Pierre grinding on Diaz, moves to the back and has hooks in, but is unable to secure a choke. Four-plus minutes of ground time for GSP, who isn’t over-exerting himself at all. GSP slams him down on his head to conclude a strong first round.

Round 2: Exchange of kicks from the two. GSP counter-striking and drops for another successful takedown. Diaz attempting to lock up a triangle, and eats a big right for his efforts. Another pair of elbows get through again. Diaz gets up with a minute to go in the round. Superman punch lands from GSP, as Diaz starts his usual taunting nature.

Round 3: Diaz talking to GSP non-stop to start this round, and GSP unloads with a left. Diaz avoids this takedown attempt by crawling to the fence on all fours, and he does. Solid jab from GSP gets through, followed by a right. Another jab and Diaz finally throws something himself, connecting to the body. Quick hook from the champion follows up several jabs. Both throw spinning kicks that miss. Diaz doing a better job of stopping the takedown, a third one this round. Diaz connecting with lefts and rights now as we go under a minute. GSP with a cut on his nose, and he scores a takedown.

Round 4: Diaz took a swing after the bell, and the ref warned him if he does it again he will be disqualified. GSP denied another takedown, but hits a jab right on the chin. Diaz stuffs another takedown, and they engage in some dirty boxing. Diaz with some hop in his step, walking around the fence with his hands down. He catches GSP with a left. GSP looks up at the clock and with two minutes left, scores a takedown. Kimura attempt by Diaz, but he’s unable to get it up against the fence.

Round 5: GSP asked if the fight was over between rounds, as he seems exhausted at this point. Still, GSP with a quick jab and locks up. Exchange of knees to the body, and again, more exchanges of knees. GSP with a little more pep in his step with three minutes to go. Diaz throws a kick and slips to the mat, allowing GSP a chance to pounce. Diaz possibly going for another kimura, but St-Pierre pulls free from it. Diaz gets out with just under two minutes to go. Swift leg kick from the challenger. Diaz working the body with quick strikes. Power takedown from GSP, as he bulls through Diaz.
