John Makdessi vs. Daron Cruickshank

We begin the FX-televised prelims in the lightweight division, as John Makdessi (10-2) takes on Daron Cruickshank (12-2). Cruickshank is currently on a six-fight win streak, while Makdessi gets the home-crowd ovation being from Montreal. The referee will be Marc Goddard.

Round 1: Early feeling out process, as both fighters are guys who enjoy throwing spinning kicks and attacks. Huge, quick and powerful kick thrown by Cruickshank that misses. The crowd is already growing restless, filling the Bell Centre with boos. Cruickshank has caused some swelling to form on the lead leg of Makdessi. Front-leg side-kick lands by Makdessi, but Cruickshank answers back with a series of strikes. Switch-kick thrown by Makdessi, but is unable to land it. A minute left, and a big strike could claim the round for either fighter. Pair of spinning attempts land by Cruickshank, but he is unable to secure a takedown.

Round 2: Cruickshank lands a head kick to start the round. Both fighters are constantly changing stances, with Cruickshank even turning his back to Makdessi several times. Cruickshank really damaging the lead leg with some kicks. It appears Makdessi has caused some damage around the right eye area. Stiff left jab from Makdessi as Cruickshank comes spinning in. Exchange of spinning back kicks and we have a fight, as these two have closed the distance and are looking to exchange. Right breaks open the nose of Makdessi, who had just landed a solid 1-2 combo of jabs. Combo from Makdessi, who has opened a cut on the right side of the face of Cruickshank.

Round 3: Makdessi knocks Cruickshank down, but wants him standing back up. So far, this has been Makdessi’s round completely, as he is controlling the action. Cruickshank denied another takedown, and eats some rights for it. Makdessi landing the jab at will, countering everything and sprawling each time a takedown is attempted. Overhand right followed by a kick from Makdessi. Spinning back kick to the body, and this has been all Makdessi so far with 90 seconds left. Makdessi receives a poke to the eye and we have a break in the action. Much like Cruickshank did earlier in the fight, he called the time himself and was granted it. The straight jab has picked Cruickshank apart throughout these last five minutes.
