Compared to past events, history was slightly different at yesterday’s K-1 World Grand Prix as Mirko Filipovic left the victor of the 8 person tournament. Though the former UFC star has competed in the tournament before, he’s never left as the overall winner.
To land that title as the winner didn’t come easy. All three fights went to a decision, with the first one against Jarrell Miller being the most difficult. The wins over Pavel Zhuravlev and Ismael Londt in the later rounds went much smoother. Filipovic improved his kickboxing record to 22-7 as a result of the three wins.
Filipovic had left kickboxing for a lengthy part of his career to give MMA a shot. He did quite well in PRIDE and the UFC going 27-10-2. He retired after three straight UFC losses before returning in December with a win to Shinichi Suzukawa for Japan’s Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye New Year’s Eve Show.
Below is video of Filipovic’s performance in the tournament.
