When Rory MacDonald went down with a neck injury, UFC 158 took a minor shakeup. Carlos Condit was in need of a new opponent and got Johny Hendricks. That meant the UFC had to find a replacement for Jake Ellenberger, which was decided in Nate Marquardt.
Ellenberger took the new fight, but wanted Condit as he’s higher ranked in the welterweight division, having recently dropped a title unification bout.
“This fight would have given me more value to be number one, it was Johny [Hendricks], and that’s exactly why we wanted to fight, and I knew I had the skills to beat him,” said Ellenberger to TATAME.
Ellenberger comes off a loss to Condit in his first UFC fight. After six wins, he was stopped by Martin Kampmann before coming back with a win off Jay Hieron.
Marquardt returns to the UFC after being released due to elevated testosterone levels in 2011. He won the Strikeforce welterweight title then dropped it on their final show in January.
They are set for the main card of UFC 158, which happens later today from the Bell Centre in Canada.
