Jose Aldo Had Trouble Making Weight For UFC 156

As Frankie Edgar was preparing to challenge Jose Aldo for his featherweight championship last month, the champion was struggling the day of weigh-ins to cut enough body mass. His trainer André Pederneiras said that Aldo needed to work hard to make the 145 pound limit.

“He woke up 1.6 pounds overweight,” said Pederneiras to TATAME. “[Aldo went] into the bathtub to lose weight. He was sweating in hot water and losing the excess.”

While cutting the weight might have been an issue, the fight went a little smoother. Aldo took a unanimous decision over Edgar for his sixth title defense. He dominated the first three rounds before Edgar began to gain some momentum, though it was too late.

It was Edgar’s debut as featherweight after reigning as the lightweight champion for several years.

The current featherweight champion has shown interest in moving up to lightweight.

Before that potentially happens, Aldo returns on August 3 to take on another fighter who will be making his featherweight debut in Anthony Pettis. That will be out of Brazil for UFC 163 from the HSBC Arena.
