Despite holding just an overall MMA record of 9-7, Mark Hunt finds himself in a strong position to challenge for the UFC heavyweight title. Hunt, who has won four straight UFC fights, will meet Junior dos Santos in May at UFC 160: Velasquez vs. Silva II.
UFC president Dana White informed reporters on Thursday in Montreal that Hunt could become the next challenge if he takes out dos Santos, a former champion himself.
“It’s crazy to say, but if he knocks Junior dos Santos out, how is this guy not next in line?” White said.
Hunt (9-7) defeated Stefan Struve earlier this month, finishing him in the third round to improve to 4-1 inside the Octagon. He’s fought the likes of Josh Barnett, Fedor Emelianenko and Alistair Overeem – all while competing for either PRIDE or DREAM, and all were losses.
“The Super Samoan” is replacing Overeem in the fight with “Cigano,” which is set to be the co-main event for the Memorial Day weekend card from Las Vegas.
