While Ronda Rousey has been credited as the poster fighter for WMMA in the UFC, at the same time Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos was hurting the sport, according to the current bantamweight champion.
“She almost destroyed women’s MMA,” said Rousey on SportsNet. “The entire sport stagnated under her and she cared more about having an unfair advantage and winning fights then she did about the sport itself and it suffered under her.”
Rousey was referencing Santos’ suspension from the sport after testing positive for steroids. She was the current Strikeforce featherweight champion at the time and considered one of the best female fighters.
Santos was released from her Zuffa contract after not being willing to cut to bantamweight, the only women’s division in the UFC. She has since signed with Invicta FC.
“We don’t owe her anything,” said Rousey. “If she wants the only title that matters she needs to go in the only division that the UFC has. We’re not making exceptions for cheaters.”
Rousey retained her title in the first WMMA fight in the UFC’s nearly 20 year history last month. She earned her seventh professional win via armbar at UFC 157.
