Play By Play

Bellator 92 comes live from the Pechanga Resort & Casino, in Temecula, California. The main event is a featherweight tournament semi-final bout between Magomedrasul Khasbulaev and Marlon Sandro. This should be an explosive night of fights, let’s get it going!

Brandon Halsey vs. Rocky Ramirez

Round 1: They clinch and separate early. Halsey gets in on a takedown and puts Ramirez on the ground about 40 seconds into the opening round. Side control for Halsey, who leans from Ramirez’s left to right and drives a knee to the body. Short elbows on top give way to bigger elbow strikes and punches as Halsey works his way to full mount. Ramirez slips free but Halsey stays all over him and now works from top position, straddling Ramirez who has stalled out on his left side. Halsey is dropping some heavy ground and pound.

Round 2: Halsey ducks a wild punch, gets a single leg and drives Ramirez back down to the ground. Ramirez shrimps up underneath as Halsey drops elbows and forearms from deep half-guard. More elbows now as Halsey scoots Ramirez around the cage, and they’re falling on the side of Ramirez’s face that’s already sporting damage. Ramirez gets busy after about two minutes and tries to throw punches from his back, so Halsey tries to pin down the right hand and throw to the body on the other side. Ramirez tries to isolate Halsey’s arm, maybe angling for a submission. The ground-and-pound of Halsey slows in the latter half of the round but he keeps top position to the bell.

Round 3: Ramirez tries to turn the tables, shooting in for the takedown, but Halsey defends. Halsey drops a few punches from the sprawl before turning the corner to take Ramirez’s back. Ramirez puts his back on the ground, Halsey has an arm-triangle choke framed up instantly and steps off the right side to squeeze it. The referee checks Ramirez’s arm and it’s limp. Halsey wins by submission.

Shad Smith vs. Aaron Miller

Round 1: Miller takes the outside and lands first with a few outside leg kicks. More leg kicks, getting harder now, as Miller continues to bounce around outside the range of Smith, who tries to find Miller’s chin with long punches. Smith is lunging and missing with wide shots, but he lands a left hook about midway through the round and Miller gets a little more space from his opponent. Miller hits a takedown with two minutes left in the round and extracts his head from a loose guillotine. Kimura attempt from Miller has Smith scrambling, and Miller is forced to adjust his grip as he straddles Smith’s head. Smith is doing well to defend, grabbing his left bicep and fending off the submission. Miller switches to an armbar with 20 seconds left, can’t get it extended before the bell.

Round 2: Miller gets another quick takedown and briefly works from Smith’s half-guard before being put back in full guard. Miller stands and comes back down, catching Smith turning over and taking the veteran’s back. Riding high on Smith’s back, Miller works to keep his hooks and then switches to a body triangle. A couple punches from Miller have Smith back on his knees, then flattened out underneath the “Blood Spiller.” More left hands from Miller, now elbows as Smith tries to guard the left side of his head. Miller keeps the shots coming while referee Herb Dean looks on. Smith seems to complain about Miller’s elbow strikes but the ref says they’re clean.

Round 3: Smith comes straight at Miller with punches, but Miller gets underneath them and soon puts Smith on his back again. Not much action on the ground as Miller works to extract himself from Smith’s half guard, while Smith just hangs on underneath. Smith tries a guillotine midway through the round but it doesn’t come close. Miller postures up and throws a double-handed chop, then gets a bit more serious with punches from on top. Smith shoves him off and tries to escape, instead giving up his back, which Miller takes with no delay. Both hooks in for Miller now, and he’s made good on his nickname, as Smith is spurting blood onto the canvas while he tries to shake Miller off his back. Miller goes from a rear-naked choke attempt to an armbar, rolling through with 10 seconds left in the round. He runs out of time, but gives Smith a couple more punches to remember him by.

Josh Appelt vs. Manny Lara

Round 1: Takedown attempt by Lara but Appelt defending well against the cage. Lara completes the double leg. Appelt back up and lands a nice left hand. Beautiful hip toss by Appelt puts Lara on the ground. Appelt landing right hands now. Big knee follows. Lara back to his feet. Appelt gets another takedown and lands more punches. Lara now bleeding. Lara back to his feet Appelt landing brutal shots but Lara fires back and gets a big takedown, then a huge illegal knee from Lara and Appelt is hurt. Referee stops the action to check on Appelt. One point deduction for the knee. Another takedown for Appelt.

Round 2: Appelt puts him against the cage. Left body shot lands for Appelt. Another body shot for Appelt. Takedown for Appelt and he’s landing shots now. Lara rolls for a knee bar but it is defended. Appelt peppering him with shots on the ground. Lara explodes, reverses and gets the back. Appelt gets on top again and Lara is bloody.

Round 3: Both look tentative and tired. Lara shoots for a takedown but is defended and Appelt gets on top and begins pounding away again. Appelt gets hit with a low blow on the ground, very rare! Two points is now taken away. The fight continues and Appelt puts him against the cage. Appelt gets the takedown. Lara explodes and gets back to his feet. Lara puts on a late rush but is unable to finish.

Keith Berry vs. Richard Rigmaden

Round 1: Rigmaden lands a nice left. Berry driving in and finishes the takedown. Shoulder strike for Berry, and he’s going for a Kimura now and finishes it!

Round 1: Both men land body kicks. leg kick lands for Saunders. Big body kick lands for Stepanyan. Snap jab for Stepanyan. Big spinning back lands. Saunders look much slower. Big spinning back kick lands for Stepanyan. Stepanyan looking to finish with a standing guillotine.

Round 1: Bezerra shoots for a takedown but it is defended. He shoots again and this time gets the takedown. Landing some punches on the ground now. Now gets full mount. Latches on to a rear naked choke, Richman looking to survive. Richman defending well. Richman able to defend being submitted the entire round.

Round 1: Cramer lands a huge right hand that drops Cooper. Cramer working on top and holding top position. Cramer gets the back now. Both hooks in now. Looking to sink in the rear naked choke. He switches to mount. Cooper explodes and gets on top.

Cooper looking to ground and pound. Cramer gets back to his feet and is winging punches. Huge uppercut lands for Cooper that stuns Cramer and he’s turning it on now. Cramer is really hurt, and Cooper finishes him with punches! WOW! great comeback, he was exhausted.

Round 1: Both men swing and miss. Aliev puts him against the cage and gets the takedown. Aliev landing some ground and pound. Landing some short hammer fists. More ground and pound. Marshall explodes and gets back to his feet but Aliev puts him back against the cage. Another takedown landed. Right hands getting through. Marshall trying to get up but is being controlled. Referee stands it up, and Aliev lands another takedown as the round ends,

Round 2: Marshall lands a huge head kick that suns Aliev, but Aliev composes and gets the takedown. Working on top now. Referee stand them up. Leg kick lands for Marshall. Another takedown for Aliev but Marshall gets back to his feet. Aliev shoots but is stuffed. Aliev shoots but is stuffed again.

Magomedrasul Khasbulaev vs. Marlon Sandro (Featherweight Tournament Semi-Final Bout

Round 1: Sandro lands a leg kick. Body kick lands for Khasbulaev. Huge knee lands to the cup to Khasbulaev and he is in a lot of pain. Khasbulaev is taking the full five minutes to recover. Khasbulaev lands a leg kick. Takedown for Khasbulaev. Sandro gets back to his feet. Big kick lands for Khasbulaev and he takes him to the ground. Looking to sink an armbar but Sandro escapes and ends up on top. Khasbulaev landing more shots on the bottom. Kimura sweep for Khasbulaev and it looks deep, but Sandro once again escapes. Sandro is getting battered now.
