Former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem revealed on his Twitter page Thursday the extent of the injury that forced him out of a planned May 25 meeting with Junior dos Santos. The bout is likely to be rescheduled for later this year.
“Injured! Caught a slightly tear in my quad muscle,” Overeem wrote. “Unfortunately out of May 25’s UFC. Not happy to let you guys ‘the fans’ down!”
Overeem was looking to bounce back into title contention following a loss earlier this year to Antonio Silva. He was originally scheduled to face “Cigano” last year, but a failed drug test prevented the fight.
Dos Santos lost the UFC heavyweight title to Cain Velasquez in his most recent fight, his first defeat in the UFC.
