The best laid plans of mice and matchmakers don’t amount to much when it comes to the harsh slap of reality. Take Alistair Overeem, for instance. He was supposed to face former champ Junior dos Santos at UFC 160 in May in what would surely have been an epic fight, but an undisclosed injury has now waylaid that meeting until sometime in the summer. Then there’s champ Anderson Silva, who was conceivably going to fight Jon Jones in some sort of “superfight”, but will actually be taking on challenger Chris Weidman UFC 162 in July. That’s still a great bout, but it’s certainly doesn’t have the some promotional gravitas as Silva vs. Jones. Oh well. That’s life in the fight business. Here’s your news:
• Here’s MMAJunkie with the Silva vs. Weidman news. And here’s ESPN saying it is the right match-up to make. I don’t disagree, but damn, a Silva/Jones fight would’ve been the stuff dreams are made of.
• Here’s the Overeem news.
• Yesterday Lorenzo Fertitta was is New York with Ronda Rousey and Weidman rustling up support for this year’s bill that would lift the ban on MMA in the state. The State Senate ultimately voted to pass their half (which they’ve been doing for the past few years), but the Assembly has to do their part, and this far they haven’t. Still, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (the man in charge) said sanctioned pro MMA in New York is inevitable. That’s something, right?
• Oh Florida.
• If you saw TUF this week, you saw Jimmy Quinlan kick ass. Here’s Darce Side Radio’s interview with him.
