Gabriel Gonzaga thinks fellow heavyweights in the UFC haven’t evolved enough when the fight goes to the ground.
“I think the heavyweight division, the people don’t have ground game skills how the other divisions have,” said Gonzaga to Pro MMA. “Every single different division has really high level black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, showing their skills except heavyweights.”
Gonzaga was critical of recent heavyweight winners Mark Hunt and Brendan Schaub. The two won their respective fights, which took place within the last month. Hunt by TKO over Stefan Struve and Schaub via decision against Lavar Johnson.
There were three exceptions to Gonzaga’s comments when he looked at the division as a whole. He thought that Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Frank Mir and Fabricio Werdum possessed solid ground game.
Gonzaga won his last two UFC fights since he returned in 2012. He fights Travis Browne on The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale on April 13. The card comes from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV.
