Alexander Gustafsson-Gegard Mousasi Bout Allowed To Be Five-Rounder By Swedish MMA Federation

The UFC made it official that all main event fights would be contested over five scheduled rounds. However, a rule in Sweden nearly kept the planned UFC on FUEL TV: Gustafsson vs. Mousasi event from being contested over 25 minutes.

The Swedish MMA Federation voted to allow the bout between Alexander Gustafsson and Gegard Mousasi as a five-rounder, according to a report by the Swedish site, Kimura.se.

“Being able to arrange a match with the 25 (minute) length at home is obviously a big deal for SMMAF,” George Sallfedlt, chairman of the SMMAF, said. “However, it is important to remember that this decision does not mean that the overall match time for MMA matches increases. Even in the future, three round matches (will) be the norm for professional business.

The federation cited the experience of both Gustafsson and Mousasi as reason for making the change. The bout takes place April 6 from Stockholm, Sweden, and could determine a future challenger to the UFC light heavyweight title.
