South Dakota Creating Athletic Commission For Combat Sports After Bill Passes By Wide Margin

South Dakota is close to regulating combat sports such as MMA.

Senator Steve Hickey’s, who labeled MMA as “the child porn of sports,” attempt to create an amendment to ban MMA in the state was shot down today reports the Argus Leader.

A bill to create a commission was approved with 50 votes for yes and 20 for no.

Governor Dennis Daugaard must sign the bill into legalization. Daugaard is opposed to making MMA legal, but since the bill passed with such a wide margin in the House of Representatives and the Senate, the governor’s veto wouldn’t matter. He has the option to let the bill become a law without his signature.
