Ramon Dekkers, Julie Kedzie, Bellator: The Morning News Roundup – 2.28.13

The world lost another warrior yesterday. Dutch kickboxing legend Ramon Dekkers passed away in his native Breda, in the Netherlands (unconfirmed reports say it was a heart attack while riding his bike). Dekkers was a Muay Thai champ, and is credited with boxing the hell out of opponents when most of them were concentrating solely on throwing kicks – in other words, he was somewhat of a pioneer, which, when it comes to combat sports, is something to be respected. Although Dekkers only had one MMA bout in his career – a bout that saw him getting heelhooked by Genki Sudo – he had crossover appeal. After all, who doesn’t like to see a skilled fighter absolutely destroy someone? Anyway, Dekkers will be missed. Here’s your news:

• Here’s some bare-bones info on Dekkers. However, if you really want to know the man and his artistry, watch him in action. Here’s Sherdog reporting his death.

• There was another episode of Darce Side Radio on FightLine last night, and the guests were Urijah Faber, Josh Samman and Julie Kedzie. As one of the UFC’s new female MMA signees, Kedzie had this poignant quote: “We’re going to have to prove ourselves over and over.”

• Bellator’s found a replacement to face champ Pat Curran at Bellator 95 since Daniel Straus is out with a broken hand, and that man is Shahbulat Shamhalaev. In case you’ve already forgotten, Shamhalaev just KO’d his way through the latest featherweight tourney, so this should be a good one. Meanwhile, another Bellator installment is tonight!
