Some have said that Chael Sonnen talked his way into the title picture with Jon Jones. Former UFC light heavyweight champion Maurício “Shogun” Rua believes the UFC knows what they’re doing and took a guess at the outcome for the future title fight.
“If he is in this fight for the belt, it is for some reason,” said Rua to TATAME. “I think Jon Jones should win this fight and keep the title, but a fight is a fight. You can not underestimate anyone.”
Jones vs. Sonnen headlines UFC 159 from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ on April 27.
The two currently star as opposite coaches on this season’s The Ultimate Fighter. When they meet, Sonnen makes the move to light heavyweight after spending the past decade as middleweight. Jones looks to break the division’s record for most successful defenses with five wins.
It was Rua who Jones took the strap from almost two years ago. Since Rua lost the gold, he has gone 2-2 under the UFC name.
