Matt Grice and Dennis Bermudez were awarded Fight of the Night for their UFC 157 outing. Even with the extra $50,000 that goes with the honor, Grice would trade it in an instant for a win.
Bermudez defeated Grice via a split-decision.
“It was a close fight and I have a lot of respect for Dennis,” said Grice during the UFC 157 post-fight press conference. “I’m stoked to get Fight of the Night, but I’d give it back for a win any day. My goal is to win and the Fight of the Night is a bonus.”
UFC president Dana White praised both fighters for what has been called an early candidate for Fight of the Year. White went on that even though Grice lost in the record books, he doesn’t consider it one.
After going 1-3, Grice was released by the UFC in 2009. By picking up four wins, he was rehired and sits at 1-2 in his second run after Saturday’s PPV.
Bermudez now has three consecutive victories since failing to win in the finals of The Ultimate Fighter.
UFC 157 was headlined with Ronda Rousey defeating Liz Carmouche in the first ever female fight under the UFC banner to retain the women’s bantamweight championship.
