Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida

The co-main event will determine the No. 1 contender in the UFC’s light heavyweight division, as ex-Strikeforce and PRIDE champion Dan Henderson (29-8) takes on former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida (18-3). Herb Dean is the referee for this one.

Round 1: Henderson with a brace on his left ankle and a wrap on his right knee. He’s looking to pepper the leg with some kicks at the start. Big inside leg kick from Henderson connects and he rushes in but is unable to unload the right hand. Crowd is definitely into this fight, from the entrances to the first few minutes, the Honda Center sounds louder than it has all night. Chant of “USA” starts for “Hendo.” Machida remains strong in his karate stance, and fakes a big kick. Counter by Machida, as he moves away from the right. Machida with a right as Henderson comes in with a kick, and he also misses a big right hand. This time, Hendo catches him with a right and clinches, but Machida gets away. They tie up as the round comes to an end, and it’s Machida who gets the takedown and a little punishment as the bell sounds.

Round 2: Kick to the body by Machida stops an attack by Henderson. Front kick to the face lands from Machida, and Henderson is unable to land anything in retaliation. Henderson stalking now, trying to cut the Octagon off and trap Machida. Machida hits with a knee as Hendo drops for a takedown attempt. Good kick to the body lands from Machida, and Henderson answers. Henderson fires off a pair of big rights, but gets blocked.

Round 3: Henderson is just standing in the middle of the Octagon now after chasing Machida for two rounds. It appears he wants to make him bring the action now. Machida fires off a nasty kick to the body. Machida misses and Henderson scores a takedown and is on top position. Machida tying up Hendo, not allowing him to unleash much offense and force a stand up from the referee. Machida gets out with just under two minutes to go. Henderson playing Machida’s style now, waiting for him to come in and counter. Hendo blocks a high kick, and misses on a huge right hand.
