Former EliteXC champion Robbie Lawler finished off Josh Koscheck in the first round when he had his first opening, earning a victory at UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche.
Lawler had not fought inside the Octagon since 2004. He spent the past several years fighting at middleweight in Strikeforce, but decided to move down to 170 pounds upon his return to the UFC.
“It feels great, thanks for having me baby,” Lawler said. “(The weight cut) wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t difficult; I felt good.”
Koscheck controlled the early few minutes with his wrestling, but “Ruthless” was able to slip out and catch the former No. 1 contender with a quick assault. Referee Herb Dean stepped in, and “Kos” quickly protested the stoppage. Lawler agreed with it, saying, “I was reigning down hard shots. He wasn’t coming back.”
Lawler is now 20-9 in his career and owns 17 knockout victories, while Koscheck falls to 17-7 and has lost two straight.
