UFC president Dana White fielded several questions concerning the recent wave of releases by his promotion on Thursday. One answer White gave, however, did not concern any cuts.
UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has signed a new eight-fight contract with the organization. Velasquez will return to action in May at UFC 160: Velasquez vs. Silva II against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.
“He deserved it,” said White, during the post-press conference media scrum for UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche. “We always try to do the right thing.”
White stated that the UFC ripped up the previous deal with Velasquez that still had three fights left because Velasquez deserved it.
“The thing that drives me the craziest is when people try to say, ‘Oh, these guys are just money-hungry,'” White said. “Money-hungry guys wouldn’t have bought this company in a million years.”
Jon Fitch, Vladimir Matyushenko and others were recently released from their contracts, and White stated that upwards of 100 fighters would be cut to help clean up the budget and make room for new fighters coming in.
