Jon Fitch was given his pink slip by the UFC earlier in the week alongside 15 other fighters. As the former UFC welterweight contender looks for a new home, Bellator won’t be one of them as the division is currently full according to CEO Bjorn Rebney.
“We have a stacked welterweight division right now,” said Rebney on The MMA Report. “We have a lot of guys that we are developing that we anticipate are going to be world class fighters and break the top ten. We want to keep guys busy. We want to keep guys inside the cage and we have a plan in terms of the next year and it’s just not the time.”
Fitch is ranked in the Top 10 by several MMA media outlets. His release came as somewhat of a shock, but UFC president Dana White said that it came down to money. Fitch has also been criticized for not finishing his UFC fights.
Out of the UFC, Fitch was 14-3-1. He has not stopped a fight since 2007. He was 1-2 since 2011 and is coming off a loss to Demian Maia at UFC 156 earlier in the month.
Fitch’s future is not clear, though White expressed that he could make a return to the UFC.
