UFC 157 Preview: The Undercard

The UFC returns to PPV with seven preliminary fights. Here’s a breakdown from that part of the card, which happens from the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA this Saturday February 23.

Welterweight: Nah-Shon Burrell vs. Yuri Villefort
The card opens with Nah-Shon Burrell making his UFC debut after going 2-1 for Strikeforce. He was to compete on the September Strikeforce card before it was cancelled. Yuri Villefort is also making his first UFC appearance. His Strikeforce defeat ended his six fight win streak and marked his return after a two year hiatus.

Welterweight: Jon Manley vs. Neil Magny
Jon Manley has fought mostly out of Massachusetts and comes in after two decision wins in 2011. Before those wins, Manley hadn’t fought since 2009. Neil Magny took his seventh win last year. He steps into the Octagon with only one blemish on his record.

Welterweight: Kenny Robertson vs. Brock Jardine
The final Facebook fight has Kenny Robertson look for his first UFC win after competing throughout the country. He has a TKO and decision loss for the promotion. Rick Story handed Brock Jardine a decision defeat back in the summer. Before that, Jardine had finished his previous three fights.

Lightweight: Sam Stout vs. Caros Fodor
The preliminary card for FX begins with Sam Stout looking to get back on a win streak. He was 1-2 last year for the UFC with each contest ending via decision. After almost a year away, Caros Fodor joins the UFC. He was defeated by Strikeforce mainstay Pat Healy in March.

Featherweight: Dennis Bermudez vs. Matt Grice
The only featherweight bout has Dennis Bermudez looking for his third win after taking a pair last year. Bermudez took Submission of the Night in his last showing. Matt Grice was released by the UFC in 2009 after going 1-3. He made a return with four wins out of FCF and as a featherweight is now 1-1.

Lightweight: Michael Chiesa vs. Anton Kuivanen
The winner of The Ultimate Fighter: Live, Michael Chiesa, comes into his second UFC fight undefeated with eight wins. He choked out Al Iaquinta to win the season and saw a setback after going down with an injury. Anton Kuivanen is one of the few Finnish fighters under contract to the UFC. He is 1-1 for them, earning a split-decision in his last encounter.

Heavyweight: Brendan Schaub vs. Lavar Johnson
Two heavy hitters meet in the main event of the preliminary card. After four consecutive wins, Brendan Schaub was knocked out twice in recent outings. After two first round knockouts, Lavar Johnson was submitted by rising star Stefan Struve in the spring. An injury to Johnson postponed this fight, which was originally set for December.
