Emanuel Newton draws Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal in tonight’s semifinals of the Season 8 light heavyweight tournament. Though Lawal is considered a favorite and bigger name, Newton was quick to point out that time could be in his favor.
“I think he’s a beaten warrior,” said Newton on MMA Junkie. “He’s had a lot of battles and he’s had a lot of surgeries. I think there’s going to be holes in his game and I just have to find those holes and capitalize on them.”
One of Lawal’s first major surgeries saw him miss most of 2011 with a knee injury. He would also question his return after a recent infection in his leg.
Lawal ended up returning at Bellator 86 and took a quick knockout over Przemyslaw Mysiala. The week prior, witnessed Newton submit Atanas Djambazov in round two. This is Newton’s second attempt to win a tournament after losing in the Summer Series semifinals.
Newton vs. Lawal happens on the main card of Bellator 90, later today at 10 p.m. ET on Spike TV. The card comes from the Maverik Center in West Valley City, UT.
