Jon Fitch, UFC 157, Women’s MMA: The Morning News Roundup – 2.21.13

Yesterday sixteen fighters were cut from the UFC roster. The sheer size of the swath of destruction would be newsworthy in and of itself, but what’s stealing the lion’s share of the attention is that one of the fighters who got the ax was top-ten welterweight Jon Fitch. Yes, the same Fitch who went the distance with champ Georges St. Pierre, who went on an impressive 16-fight win streak, and whose only losses in the Octagon have come at the hands of GSP, Johny Hendricks and Demian Maia. Of course, there are myriad reasons why the American Kickboxing Academy stalwart could have received his pink slip – Maia utterly dominated him in his last fight, and it’s likely that Fitch’s contracted pay far exceeded the returns Dana White and company would see on their investment.
