Johny Hendricks looks at Rory MacDonald’s injury as a way for him to finally get the title shot he’s been asking for. After MacDonald went down with a back and neck injury, Hendricks volunteered to face former UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit.
“He was the interim champion and is coming off a fight with Georges St. Pierre,” said Hendricks to Bleacher Report. “That fight is still fresh in people’s minds and if I can put on a good performance against Condit that should show everybody I’m ready for that title shot.”
Condit was defeated by St. Pierre via decision at UFC 154 to unify the titles. St. Pierre was coming off an ACL injury that kept him away from the Octagon for over a year.
Hendricks has been considered one of the top names in the welterweight division with a 14-1 record. Of his last five UFC wins, three he ended in the opening round to take Knockout of the Night.
MacDonald should return to training in about a month.
The co-main event of UFC 158 is now Hendricks vs. Condit from the Bell Centre. That happens on March 16 out of Canada.
