Nate Marquardt will be returning to the Octagon this March, as the former Strikeforce welterweight contender meets Jake Ellenberger at UFC 158: St-Pierre vs. Diaz. MMAjunkie.com confirmed the news with a source late Monday after Rory MacDonald’s injury caused changes to the lineup.
Johny Hendricks was asked – and agreed – to face Carlos Condit in place of MacDonald, leaving Ellenberger without an opponent for the evening.
Marquardt (32-11-2) quickly took to Twitter to say he was free to fight that day, and it looks like he will get the chance. “The Great” is a former contender in the UFC’s middleweight division, but was released after being forced out of a fight due to a failed medical test two years ago.
Ellenberger (28-6) is 7-2 in his UFC career.
