Chael Sonnen might not be the favorite when he faces Jon Jones for the light heavyweight championship, but Vinny Magalhaes doesn’t see it that way. He looks at the upcoming match as a chance for Sonnen to showcase his ground skills.
“Jon Jones hasn’t been tested off his back and that’s exactly where Chael is going to be able to put him,” said Magalhaes at BJPENN.com. “I think Chael takes a decision in that fight, it’s a tough fight but I don’t see it as a mismatch like most people think it is.”
Magalhaes recalled how Sonnen almost defeated Anderson Silva by using the same game plan. He suggested that Jones wasn’t as athletic as Silva, giving Sonnen the edge.
“I don’t think Jones has the capability of submitting Chael off his back, not that he’s not good there but he’s not as good as Anderson is to be able to do that and it took Anderson five rounds to do it,” said Magalhaes. “I won’t get as far to say that Chael finishes Jon but I definitely think he wins a decision.”
When the pair fights, it will be Sonnen’s return as light heavyweight after spending the last decade in the middleweight category. At the same time, Jones looks for a record tying fifth championship defense in the division.
UFC 159 comes from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ and will host the fight on April 27. Meanwhile, the two can be seen coaching opposite one another on the current season of The Ultimate Fighter on Tuesdays.
On the same card, Vinny Magalhaes finally meets Phil Davis after the two have been complaining that the other is ducking the fight for many months.
