Since the UFC and Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos were unable to figure out a contract between the two parties, the former Strikeforce featherweight champion was granted her release within the past week. She has since signed with Invicta FC, where she will compete in her natural weight class at 145 pounds.
The biggest issue that led to the release revolved around the two sides not agreeing on what weight class Santos should fight in. The UFC only has a women’s bantamweight division and Santos thought the 10 pound cut in weight was a health risk.
“It makes sense to us because we have compelling fights for her 145,” said Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp to MMA Weekly. “We have under contract Ediane Gomez, Julia Budd, Fiona Muxlow; we’ve got compelling fights, compelling match-ups for her. So it makes sense for her [to stay at 145].”
Santos makes her debut against one of the names Knapp listed in Gomez. It will be Santos’ first fight since being suspended for steroids after a December 2011 Strikeforce fight. Gomez comes in on four wins, with the last two taking place for Invicta FC.
The pair meet at Invicta FC 5 on April 5 from the Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, MO. Streaming information has not been made public.
