Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir was a surprise addition to Jon Jones’ coaching staff for The Ultimate Fighter. Now, however, it could all be coming together, as Mir plans to work with Greg Jackson, the head coach of the UFC light heavyweight champion.
Mir decided to venture from his typical training as he prepares to meet Daniel Cormier at UFC on FOX: Henderson vs. Melendez in April. He was defeated by Junior dos Santos early in 2012, and missed the rest of the year after suffering an injury.
“I’ve always felt I have great trainers, so there was no reason to leave, but my wife and I were talking about how I needed to change things up,” said Mir, during a recent interview with ESPN. “One of the things was maybe I should get out of town and get more focused. I’ve always been impressed with Greg Jackson’s game planning. I figured before I retire, I want to be a part of that and see what makes this guy so successful.”
Mir plans to still have his normal corner with him the night of the fight, including long-time coach Jimmy Gifford.
