Chael Sonnen and Daniel Cormier are friends, but when there’s UFC gold on the line that gets pushed to the side.
“I love Daniel Cormier as a person, competitor and friend,” said Sonnen to Fight Hub TV. “I would love to see Daniel Cormier get his title shot and if that means it’s against me, I’m not going to slow down a friend. I’m a true friend and I’ll give him a shot.”
Before a potential match-up between the two newest additions to the UFC light heavyweights division could happen, a few things need to take place first.
At UFC on FOX 7, which is set for April 20 from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA, Cormier makes his UFC debut as a former Strikeforce grand prix winner. He meets Frank Mir in a heavyweight fight that was supposed to happen in November under the Strikeforce name. Mir went down with an injury and the fight was scratched.
Sonnen currently coaches opposite light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. They meet the following week at UFC 159 from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ. It will be Sonnen’s return to a heavier weight class after spending the last decade as middleweight.
