Alexander Gustafsson’s win over former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua continues to impress UFC president Dana White. The young Swede will return to action in April against Gegard Mousasi in the main event of UFC on FUEL TV: Gustafsson vs. Mousasi.
During a recent conference call, Lyoto Machida stated that he felt the winner of his upcoming bout with Dan Henderson was the rightful No. 1 contender. White, however, disagrees with that notion.
“If Mousasi beats Gustafsson, he skyrockets right to the top of that division,” said White, during a press conference on Wednesday for UFC on FUEL TV: Barao vs. McDonald. “And as far as Gustafsson goes, if he beats Mousasi, he’s in line for a title shot. This is a big fight for both of those guys.”
Gustafsson (15-1) has won seven of his eight Octagon bouts, while Mousasi (33-3-2) will be competing for the first time with the UFC since crossing over from Strikeforce. He is a former DREAM and Strikeforce champion, having gone unbeaten in 21 of his last 22 fights.
Machida and Henderson meet next Saturday night in the co-main event of UFC 157: Rousey vs. Carmouche.
