From a public standpoint, it was a day filled with mixed emotions for Sara McMann. First, the good news, as it was confirmed that McMann has joined the ranks of the UFC.
However, earlier in the day, the IOC made it known that they plan to end the sport of wrestling in the Olympics beginning with the 2020 Games. McMann was a silver medalist for Team U.S.A. in wrestling.
“I am heartbroken,” said McMann, in an interview with Fighters.com. “That’s the word that keeps popping up in my head. I went through the five stages of grief today with the announcement. It’s been a very stressful day with a lot of ups and downs.”
McMann has yet to hear her name called for her Octagon debut, though, she could be in line to face Alexis Davis. The 32-year-old is 6-0 in her pro career, including wins over Shayna Baszler and Hitomi Akano last year.
