Chael Sonnen is one of a handful of fighters who have been granted the use of an exemption for the use of testosterone replacement therapy by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Recently, it was confirmed that Vitor Belfort was given a TRT, but by the Brazilian commission.
The result raised a lot of eyebrows in the U.S., and Sonnen sounded off on the decision during a recent episode of UFC Tonight.
“Let’s get one thing straight: there’s no such thing as a TRT. It’s just T, testosterone,” Sonnen said. “He’s taking testosterone and the rules of Nevada are extremely clear, as they were explained to me. When I went through the rules in July, the No. 1 rule was that you could not have ever tested positive for a banned substance, period.”
Belfort has tested positive for a banned substance previously in his career, as back in 2006 the NAC suspended him for nine months after 4-hydroxytestosterone was found in his system.
