Former UFC champion Vitor Belfort will meet the final Strikeforce middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold, in Brazil early in 2013, according to UFC president Dana White. News of the fight was confirmed by White during the UFC on FUEL TV: Barao vs. McDonald press conference Wednesday in London.
No exact date or venue has been locked down by the UFC, but it is expected to be a major event. White said the target date is the second quarter of the year.
Belfort (22-10) is coming off a TKO victory over Michael Bisping earlier this year in his native country of Brazil.
Rockhold (10-1) was the last fighter to hold the Strikeforce title before the promotion folded. The bout could likely serve as a No. 1 contender match to the UFC middleweight championship, currently held by Anderson Silva.
