Before Rasul Mirzaev could make his Bellator debut, he landed 15 months in prison over an incident that left one man dead.
Mirzaev was originally charged with murder in 2011. This past November, he was convicted of negligent manslaughter and released by the court for time served.
The moment is one Mirzaev doesn’t like to bring up.
“I prefer not to talk about this,” said Mirzaev to MMA Mania. “The situation is very touchy in Russia and still for a while will be. It is regrettable but never intentional.”
After getting into an argument, Mirzaev punched 19-year-old Ivan Agafonov outside a Russian nightclub. It was discovered that when Agafonov hit the pavement, it resulted in his death four days later.
Mirzaev has not returned to MMA since the charges were filed.
