After five years as a middleweight, Court McGee’s drop to welterweight was long past due. McGee exclusively told MMA Convert that the initial decision was made 18 month ago.
“I’ve been anticipating the weight cut for a year, year-and-a-half,” said McGee. “I was going to do it prior to my fight in Australia, but we ended up not doing it because we got offered the fight.”
That loss was the first of two for McGee in 2012. The two decision defeats came via Costa Philippou at UFC on FX 2 and Nick Ring at UFC 149 from Canada.
“After this last fight in Calgary, we called up [UFC matchmaker] Joe [Silva] and told him I have to cut down to 170,” said McGee. “He said alright.”
McGee returns in his new weight class against Josh Neer at UFC 157 on the preliminary card, which airs on FX. The event comes from the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA on February 23.
